AU - Bonny, Helen PY - 1973 TI - BEGINNERS IMAGERY ED - Helen Bonny (1976) - Pachelbel ending program Helen Bonny - as GROUP EXPERIENCE (1982) - Helen Bonny as EXPLORATIONS (1994) U1 - Ravel: Dahpnis and Chloë Ballet (excerpt) 7:21 Brahms: Symphony #1 (Un poco allegretto e grazioso) 4:41 Respighi: The Pines of Rome (Gianicola) 6:15) Debussy: Nocturnes (Sirenes) 10:53 Tschesnokoff: Salvation is Created 5:02 Pachelbel: Canon in D 7:09 N2 - "Beginner’s Imagery. If you are experiencing for the first time, or leading a group to the idea, the Beginner’s Imagery tape is recommended. This tape, made up of six widely differing but homogenously arranged selections, provides for a variety of experience. For the therapist, the diversity of music provides a brief diagnostic map of possible areas to explore.” (From: Newsletter vol 1, no 2, 1974) Based on six of Leuner’s Guided Affective Imagery scenarios. Renamed Beginner’s Group in 1976, then Group Experience in 1982. Renamed Explorations in 1994

AU - Bonny, Helen PY - 1973 TI - IMAGERY ED - (1996), Helen Bonny & Ken Bruscia CY - 37:38 M: 39:47 N1 - M: Imaginative #1-2-3-4-5 (tag: 9) U1 - Ravel: Introduction and Allegro for Harp and Strings Copland: Appalachian Spring (excerpt) Tschaikovsky: 4th Symphony (Scherzo) Respighi: The Birds (The Dove) / M: Mendelssohn 5th Symphony (Andante) Turina: La Oracion del Torero /M: Suk: Serenade in E-flat Major op. 6 (Adagio) IMAGERY-M: Ravel: Introduction and Allegro for Harp and Strings Copland: Appalachian Spring (excerpt) Tschaikovsky: 4th Symphony (Scherzo) Mendelssohn: 5th Symphony (Andante Suk: Serenade in E (Adagio) SHORT VERSION (Bonny 1998): Ravel - Copland - Pachelbel: Canon (25:37) N2 - Analysis of Imagery-M by Bruscia et al (2005): RAVEL has the potential to evoke visual fantasies that incorporate physical, musical, self-reflective, and interactional images. COPLAN has the potential to evoke interactional and self-reflective images that carry emotion. TSCHAIKOVSKY has the potential to evoke interactional and self-reflective images. MENDELSSOHN has the potential to evoke interactional images that have somatic and emotional components. SUK has the potential to evoke visual, interactional and self-reflective fantasies. The ENTIRE PROGRAM has the potential to evoke interactional FANTASIES THAT INVOLVE SELF-REFLECTION AND VISUAL EXPERIENCES, ACCOMPANIED BY PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL REACTIONS. The music can play an important role in the configuration of the imagery. The Ravel can provide opportunities for for developing a wide variety of of imagery. The remaining pieces can all provide opportunities for the imager to have self-dialogues, and to engage in interactions and dialogues with others. The Copland and the Mendelssohn may evoke deeper emotions, and the Suk may encourage the elaboration of and expansion of existing imagery leading ultimately to a resultion of tensions and closure of the narrative. The Copland, Mendelssohn, and Suk may all provide opportunities for healing. More Analyses: Bonny (1993) = Bonny (2002) p. 325-34 Bonny (2002) p. 318-19 Grocke (2002) p. 111-13 N2 - "Imagery. The imagery tape, as suggested by its name, encourages visual aspects of imagery and is useful for initial group sessions and/or with individuals who wish to stimulate visualisation ability. The selections on the Imagery tape are exclusively instrumental." HB (From: Newsletter vol. 1 no. 2, 1974) "In therapy, it is non-threatening and open ended and useful for a general exploration of the inner personality". HB (From: Newsletter vol. 3, no. 2, 1976)

The Positive Affect tape, our first and one of our best, is effective in all situations, more especially powerful when subjects are seeking to get in touch with religious and transpersonal experiences. In individual work the tape provides qualities of support and renewal." HB (From Newsletter vol. 1, no. 2, 1974)

Our experience confirms the observation that the male and female voices, and the resonant sounds of the cello on the Comforting/Anaclytic tape encourage return to childhood and early nurturance. It is therapeutically useful by itself or in combination with other tapes." HB (From Newsletter vol. 1, no. 2, 1974) "For the general listener, it provides a setting of warmth, comfort, reverie, perhaps even a touch of sadness at the remembrance of moments past. Therapeutically, it is useful by itself or in combination with other ICM programs, for example after Affect Release or before Positive Affect." HB (From Newsletter vol. 3, no. 2, 1976) "Purpose: Comfort, return to childhood" HB (Notes from the Bonny Archives, Temple U.)

AU - Bonny, Helen PY - 1973 TI - AFFECT RELEASE CY - O: 26:46 MfI version: 27:40 N1 - Active #1-2-3-4 U1 - Holst: The Planets (Mars) (7:11) Bach: Toccata and Fugue i D Minor (Stokowski arr.) Music of strong regular rhythms provide a structure for the urging, abrasive, insistence inherent in the music selections. When subjects have reached a satisfactory release of feelings, the tape should immediately be changed to Comforting/Anaclytic and/or Positive Affect." HB (From: Newsletter vol.1, no. 2, 1974)

TY - GEN AU - Bonny, Helen PY - 1973 TI - DEATH/REBIRTH ED - Bruscia, Helen Bonny & Ken CY - O: 39:52 M: 44:54 N1 - M: Regenerative #3-4-5-6 U1 - Wagner: Siegfried's Funeral March (From Götterdämmerung) (7:40) Rachmaninoff: Isle of the Dead (17:00) Bach: Crucifixus (From Mass in B Minor) (4:50)/ M: Bach: O Mein Jesu Mahler: Der Abschied (Excerpt) (From: Das Lied von der Erde) (10:22) N2 - Bonny (1978b) = (2002), p. 311-13 Grocke (2002, p. 107-08) N2 - "Death/Rebirth and Peak experience. The new tapes Death/Rebirth and Peak Experience were designed to be used together. They provide a total of 70 minutes of music suggesting the themes of ego death and renewal. Obviously, these tapes should be used in special situations with an appropriate introduction and adequate preparation of experiencer(s)." HB (From Newsletter vol. 1, no. 2, 1974) Death/Rebirth suggests themes of ego death and renewal. This program including selections by Wagner, Scriabin, Bach and Mahler, is most effectively used by listeners involved in a death/rebirth psychological process, and will be most profitable when the listeners are prepared beforehand for the experience by a therapist and/or a personal conversation event. Personal integration of the rebirth experience may be aided by the Peak Experience cassette." HB (From Newsletter vol. 3, no. 2, 1976)

AU - Bonny, Helen PY - 1973 TI - COSMIC/ASTRAL CY - 37:37 U1 - Strauss: Thus Spake Zarathustra (excerpt) (11:09) Scriabin: Poem of Extacy (19:28) Holst: The Planets (Neptune) (7:00) N2 - Following this description of the Cosmic Astral tape, there is the following recommendation: "ICM feels that in order to do successful and helpful work with music and ASC, responsibility for the experience needs to include provision for integration of the session. Integration can best be achieved by providing a positive closure via quiet music and the supportive presence of a trusted person." This comment suggests that people experiencing this program had difficulty in returning to an alert consciousness at the end. The program was removed from the list in 1975 because of the negative feedback Helen received about it. (Denise Erdonmez Grocke) Comments in Grocke (2002, p. 106) N2 - "The Cosmic/Astral tape is recommended for experienced "trippers". The musical stimulus is demanding and complex; the phenomenology, varied and unpredictable". HB (FROM NEWSLETTER Vol. 1, No. 2, 1974)

AU - Bonny, Helen PY - 1973 TI - PEAK EXPERIENCE ED - (1996), Helen Bonny & Ken Bruscia CY - O: 30:20 M: 31:41 N1 - Transportive #1-2-3-4-5 U1 - Beethoven: Piano Concerto #5 (2nd movement) (6:36) Vivaldi: Gloria (Et in Terra Pax) (5:46) Bach: Adagio (from Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C) (5:12)/ M: Bach: Brandenburg Concerto #6 (Adagio) (5:29) Fauré: Requiem (In Paradisum) (2:56) Wagner: Lohengrin (Prelude to Act I) (9:50) N2 - Kasayka (1988) Grocke (2002, p. 119-121) N2 - "The Peak Experience tape is designed as a catalyst for listeners who are ready or primed for reaching a peak experience. Selections from Brahms, Vivaldi, Bach, Faure and Wagner enhance the very special transpersonal quality of the music program. Like Death/Rebirth, which it naturally follows, Peak Experience seems most successful when used with individuals and groups in psychologically appropriate situations". HB (From Newsletter Vol. 3, no. 2, 1976)

Its initial impact helps open unconscious levels. Gentler selections that follow allow the listener’s inner mind to express its own needs. Emotional Expression is stronger than ICM’s Comforting/Anaclytic program, yet less forceful and demanding that the Affect Release selections. It is about understanding the pain and regrets of nostalgia, of longed-for outcomes that did not eventuate. The program was designed for men of any age who need to integrate the archetypes of the good warrior and the good king into their psyches. Doing so often involves distinguishing between the mature and the immature manifestations of these male archetypes. Though women are often attracted to this program, and particularly those wihing to integrate these archetypes into the animus, the musical selections may reqire too much stamina for too long of a time, therein making it difficult or undesirable for some to get through the entire program. The program was designed according to a story line. In the opening Rachmaninoff male chorus, the warriors gather around the camp fire, singing in unison. In the short movement by Alwyn, that follows, the dragon appears, it is the enemy to be defeated. As the Walton symphony begins, the warriors fall into battle formation, and the King leads them into a long battle, one that requires bravery and unswerving resolve to prevail. After much fighting, the battle is won, as the Walton comes to a chrashing and triumphant close. A silence ensues, followed by the Rachmaninoff funeral march scored for barotone solo and orchestra. Here the king is heard walking thorugh the battlefield, lamenting the death of his men. The ending brings bittersweet joy. The Finzi ushers in a new scene, the King and his warriors returning home in a victorious parade before his people. Then in the Benedictus of the Mass by Durufle, the holy priest blesses the king and warriors in a sacred ceremony, and the warriors respond with the Sanctus. In the final Alleluia by Thompson, the warriors reunite and rejoice, this time in deeper, spirtual bond with one another." KB Heuristic analysis by Lawes & Nares (2008)

The music meanders, stretches, turns, lifts, moves often in unexpected directions, yet maintains a sense of introspection. It does not have as many peaks and valleys as CI or CII, yet it has surprises. It has great internal variety of pattern. The music invites, then demands, examination and development of the new ideas, images and insights gathered from sessisons with CI and CII. CIII requires expert guiding from expert guides because of the intricate image patterns which could be evoked by the music. It is a working program. The program can also be used when a client's self-image has begun to change, a new way of being is presented, an new set of concepts is introduced etc. The music lends itself to introspective examination of things. AU - Mardis, Linda Keiser PY - 2001 TI - PROGRAM 34 - "LABYRINTH" CY - 33:36 U1 - Aubert: Feuilles d'Images (Confidence) (3:41) Brahms: Clarinet Quintet in B MInor op. 115 (Adagio) (10:26) Rachmaninov: Vocalise (Orchestral Transcription) (5:52) Fauré: Pelleas et Melisande op. 80 (Prelude) (7:14) Haydn: Symphony #13 in D Major (Adagio cantabile) (5:53) N2 - (see PROGRAM 33) N2 - PROGRAM 34, "Labyrinth", is inspired by the Labyrinth at Chartres, and by renewed interest both in labyrinths in spiritual development and as metaphors for many types of life journeys and processes. Its shorter playing time, approximately 34 minutes, is intentional, so that: a longer pre-session time can be spent contemplating or walking an actual or imagined labyrinth, working with a finger labyrinth, or drawing a mandala; the program can be used in its entirety after a change in image direction from another program; the session can be extended with another piece suggested by the direction and activity of the client's imagery and affective state at the close of the program; or the entire program can fit into a shorter therapeutic session time. In addition, each piece has some potential use individually as a precursor, a short imager, or an extender. The five pieces were chosen to suggest the five steps of the labyrinth experience: contemplating at the entrance; walking to the center; meditating at the center; walking back out to the edge; carrying the experience into the world. (If you have walked a labyrinth, you will understand the many changes that occur in the second piece, as a variety of thoughts go through one's mind during this walk.) Surprisingly, most imagers in the test sessions chose to follow those steps, though they were certainly under no obligation to do so. They said that the progression seemed important to them. Another surprise has been the depth of experience that seems to happen in a relatively short period of time; which indicates that this is a program for experienced imagers and experienced facilitators, and also that the mystery of the labyrinth is potent. The tape is also effective with adults. The excerpts are to be used singly or in succession based upon the needs of the listener or group." Each story is based upon the following psychological issues (although other issues will also arise): 1) Departure-separation, mourning, expression of feelings. 2) Anima-accepting nurturance and help. 3) Shadow-confronting a repressed or out-of-control part of the self 4) Dragon fight - conquering life's challenges, attaining inner growth. 5) Returning - accepting rewards integrating knowledge, learning from life's experiences. The five issues or stages correspond with the five music selections. Manuscript for the guiding exists in The Bonny Archive, Temple U.
